Why is Ile d'Ambre a protected area?

Ile d’Ambre is a protected natural park of 137 hectares situated in the North east of Mauritius. It is known for its diverse flora and fauna with various endemic plant species and birdlife.

The marine eco system is in very good condition as due to its shallow waters not many boats can pass close. Kayaking along Ile d’Ambre is a great way to approach the mangroves without disturbing the marine eco system.

Ile d Ambre is the largest islet in the lagoons of Mauritius.

The island has historical significance, having been inhabited by humans in the past. Ruins of old settlements can still be found on the island, offering a glimpse into its history.

Yes you can set foot on Ile d’Ambre during our sea kayaking trip. The island offers well-maintained hiking trails that wind through lush forests, along the coast, and past historical sites. It’s a great place for nature lovers and those seeking adventure.

Ile d’Ambre is not accessible by land, making it a secluded and peaceful destination. Visitors can reach the island by boat only.

What is the importance of the mangroves?

Mangroves are an important part of the coastal ecosystem in Mauritius, and are found in narrow belts along the coast and in thicker zones on the eastern coast.

They play a vital role in protecting the coast from storms and other natural disasters, and in mitigating the effects of climate change on coral reefs and fisheries.

There are two species of mangrove in Mauritius:

Rhizophora mucronata and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. Both are in the Rhizophoraceae family, and are commonly known as Red Mangroves.

Mangroves used to be found all over the island, but deforestation for development and other reasons has led to a decrease in their distribution.

Mangrove restoration and propagation are key strategies for protecting the coastal biodiversity of Mauritius. The Association pour le Développement Durable (ADD) has planted around 70,000 mangrove seedlings in villages such as Le Morne, Quatre Soeurs, and Case Noyale.
